Venkatesh Rao, a Forbes.com columnist, mentioned DIY Drones in a post, saying that drones interest him. His portrayal of DIYers however, would lead a novice UAV builder to believe he is both ignorant of, and resentful toward the people who are leading innovation on a grassroots level.
Mr. Rao is years behind in his understanding of the capabilities of the average person, and of the UAVs he speaks of. To dismiss the DIY Drone community as a bunch of yahoo wackjobs is paramount to the mistake Cornwallis made when assesing the resolve of America's rag-tag Revolutionary War Militias. (No offense to our British brothers and sisters. This makes for interesting dinner conversations around my American/British family) Mr. Rao, there is certifiable worldwide talent behind this "movement", and frankly I am surprised that such a poorly researched article would be accepted to grace a page within the Tech section of such a recognized magazine.
The thought that we as a community would reside in any one corner of the political spectrum is laughable, and a passing role in the development of an early quadrocopter does not give the right to claim newer advancements are equally lacking in capabilities.
According to our esteemed commentator the following is a list of the top ten things to do with a UAV:
The Top 10 Applications List
Maybe in the future, Mr. Rao will have more success without smearing the respectable work we are doing. In fact, our may be the most coordial international venture in history.

Lyn...I do not mean to bash Brits in any way. I assume you know that due to your smiley face. I could have used the German's refusal to accept the compromise of enigma, but then someone would have commented with another WWII example. It would be the same outcome with a different person posting. I do not inted any offense to anyone. I was just using a historical reference to one General who made a famous mistake as most generals have at some point.
In reference to J.A.B., if UAV stories generate tons of hits, then columnists will write more UAV columns. It is hard to remove an ongoing topic from the mainstream. More people will read the columns and conduct more of their own research. Just like a child will act badly to get attention...bad attention hurts, but the goal is still accomplished. My point is I wish the authors would handle these articles with a little more objectivity. Maybe Mr. Rao and others will do better by us when they see that we will hold them accountable. These columnists will also see that we are quite a sociable group and would love to contribute and assist when the reporting is fair. I would imagine Rao would have to come up with a follow up if the link to this blog were posted in the response section to the article on the Forbes page :)
Or even better yet...to post a link to DIY drones homepage and a link to this blog!

Comment by Brian Linger on February 23, 2012 at 7:16pm I disagree with this gentlemen on various points, but DIY's response does little to help their cause.
"In fact, our may be the most coordial international venture in history"
It may or may not be, but I would like to see proper english as well as the individual being attacked given a chance to speak his/her mind in this forum. Shutting down opinions is the quickest form of OS death.
Comment by David M Eno on February 23, 2012 at 8:24pm I plan to do all of these things and whats more I plan to do them at the next red necks games yeee hawwww
Comment by David M Eno on February 23, 2012 at 8:25pm Also, I think some of them are very creative.....
Brian,
Thank you for your comments. Mr. Rao should have editors, and is most likely paid for his journalistic professionalism. You and I are not, as evidenced by a quote of your own use of the plural form of gentleman:
"I disagree with this gentlemen on various points, but DIY's response does little to help their cause."
I have two full-time jobs and was running out of the door when I posted this blog. There may be no excuse for my omission of the letter "s", but I would accept our mistakes over his misrepresentation of our group. I am sure that Mr. Rao has seen the DIY Drones page. With his interest in drones, he has the ability to join and post as I did. It is not however, as easy for me to becomes a Forbes contributor. He also has the ability to reach more readers than I do; therefore I do not give any credibility to claims of unfairness toward Mr. Rao.
Comment by Greg Fletcher on February 23, 2012 at 8:48pm @ Brian,
You may want see english properly, but I am sorry. here many have seen english for a second forine language.
I speak perfect English as it is my native language, and now one is stopping the "victim" from responding here. I'll bet you have never made a typographical error that your spelling correctness system failed to pick up because is was a different word out of context with the flow of the intended sentence.

So you would give credibility to Mr Rao if he spoke only to a small community such as "ours"? I say the comments were unfair, because they were not balanced, his or yours.
