yes, you have to use Adafruit adapter. Sparkfun does not support the current rate demand of those Xbees.
I guess DIYdrones works well too, but I never tried it.

some time ago I wrote a guide on setting Xbees for UavDevBoard. Programming it is the same, only change baudrate.
Just in the case it would help.
