I would hesitate to describe the ArduPilot project as commercial. This really does not do justice to the fact that this is an open-source community effort led by Chris and only lately available in a series of kits from various different suppliers.…

Twelve hours of top gun sound track would be a bit much.

I've see quite a few different camera perpectives before, but this is cool... I had never thought of head on before.

There are several threads here about doing just that...but before you lump the ArduIMU in with gyros or even standard IMUs, the ArduIMU is not a standard IMU. Its an IMU-AHRS. Re-read Chris's post above!

There are several levels to this thread... 1) using flight stabilizers to correct the tesndency of learners to correct or freeze, 2) using a simulator to learn correct control and become more comfortable, and 3) using an autopilot like ArduPilot. Re…

I shouldn't have made this political, sorry.

Just a reminder that you can't rely on metal detectors since a vast majority of these mines are non-ferous. (Speaking of "vast majority"... a vast majority are american made)

Sounds like you mean the Kestral UAS. Here's a video off their site.

I don't think Chris has to worry about that.

Looks like a cut'n paste from the TransportCanada sheets... Now try and find a definition of "Model Aircraft". I can't! They do not distinguish/catagorize the actual application... eg. recreational/commercial, etc. .

You are comparing the wrong items... I assume you mean the ArduPilot NOT the ArduIMU?

@bGatti This setup is exactly the same boom & tail from my cessna 337 and assuming that this aircraft will have some kind of landing gear, I don't see the problem. Again this relies on there being gear... otherwise, yes the vertical stabilizer's lo…

@Felix- The term OSD is usually the telemetry data added visually onto the video downlink. You are referring to the data the Xbees downlink to a groundstation. @Oliver - do you mean you would just let an autopilot fly off over the horizon with no…

Aren't these target drones, or are they actual UAVs?

Oops. My bad

Yes, I understand.. I should not have used the word flippant... it was late and I had the wrong phrase on my tongue. No worries.

When you think about it, this is a bargain considering the complexity of UAV systems... look what the military dishes out. By buying one component kit at a time and learning the theory behind it, and then picking up a shield or OSD or upgrade IMU,…

XBees are not used for video, just telemetry. (cannot support video bandwidth requirements) Normally they are used alongside the RC/UAV control and the optional video downlink systems. It can be a hassle to find 3 different frequencies to allow si…

@Darren -No, it not just the AMA regs Morli is referring to! (in fact the AMA shuns FPV and UAV flights) It just so happens we do have several very expert members on this site who are actively involved with the FAA and other govt regulatory bodies.…

"This site contains a wealth of information meant to address the very questions you are asking.

Many like minded people have begun just as you are and rec'd ideas and aswers by reading about the experiences of the modellers and experimenters before you.

Since alot of the enjoyment (for most of us) comes from the trial and error of a custom configuration, it would perhaps be best if you read some of the many threads and articles here at DIY Drones."

Hey, that is so cool! The ArduPilotPro uses an Arduino board, which is something me and Ryan were talking about a while back. I was actually thinking about purchasing the arduino board anyways, to play around with and use with different projects. But now I will actually have a good reason to get one...

There is actually a cheaper one out there called the Boarduino, but I think there are some significant differences so the Boarduino might not work with this.

I haven't had much of a chance to read the ArduPilotPro page yet but I will try to do so today.

I'm just reading through now, and I think I would have a lot better perspective on all this if I understood a little more about R/C planes and exactly what a finished autopilot device needs to do... do you have any links or info in that regard? I'll look around on my own too, but I thought you might have some good info kickin around.

Oops, I'm posting in two different places here. My previous posts were replies to your comments on my wall. I was just asking if you had info about exactly what the autopilot does, but I think I found what I need, so don't worry.

So I'm looking around here, and I saw a post where Chris states that the ArduPilot (not ArduPilotPro) code would be out soon, that was in June I believe. And then on the ArduPilot page it says that the code is in alpha. So it's not actually been released yet? Or am I just not looking hard enough...

Hi Sgt Ric

I hope there will be no goosestepping. The few people I know actually working commercially are north of the border and as long as they are they it gives me hope for a civilian market. Transport Canada appears to be willing to even allow overflight of populated areas as long as you ask nicely and are not flying a 200lb monster.

Ric,
No problem mate don't worry about it, but just so you know and so we can clear the air, I have a degree in aerospace systems engineering and my project which won a first prize in a European UAV competition was designing a UAV from an aerodynamic point of view. Anyways due to my circumctances in life I never had the chance to actually get hands on with the stuff you guys are up to and the reason I'm turning to this field as a hobby is because I have a few good ideas to implement but I need to gain some experience first. Any ways I truly do respect someone who has the decency to leave me a comment like you did.
all the best and keep in touch

Ric, I was just reading your profile and saw that you were working on the nitroplanes 337, I guess great minds think alike (lol) that is exactly what I'm planning. I also have a nitoplanes Predator with an Ardupilot in it plus FPV camera. I haven't ordered the 337 yet, have you put yours together and flown it yet, it looks like a great airframe to play with. I'm thinking of putting a single Zenoah 26 (since I have it laying around) in the rear leaving the front open for stuff, also I want to redesign the nose to look more like the RQ-7 Shadow. Have a great day.

Doug
