Doug, two RTK GPS units are commonly used in the marine industry as compasses for multi-beam bathymetric surveys and for DP (dynamic positioning) for dredgers and other vessels - similar to position hold. I haven't heard of them being used for att...

Outside my door is the madness of Luanda! Once out of town though it's a stunning place. After 15 years in Nigeria it's great to be able to drive long distance without worrying about armed robbers! Hopefully, I can post some pictures soon...

Nice and green there Gary. I wish you could roam the bush so freely in Angola but I like my legs! I think I have found a mine free place to fly to the north of Luanda so might start testing there soon...

Mark, if you want to maintain the accuracy you are working with then you are probably using the best method. A 1 degree error in the IMU will give you about 2' error on the ground from 100' altitude. That 1 degree accuracy needs to take into accou...

My email to SPARC regarding Sparkfun cease and desist....

Dear Sirs,
I am writing to express my disbelief and disappointment that you have issued a cease and desist notice to Sparkfun in respect of their tradename. I am a customer of Sparkfun and have bought their products in relatively large numbers in recent time. I have never at anytime confused their products with yours and...

Out of interest I went to my search engine (Yahoo UK & Ireland) and searched for 'SPARC'. The first result was "SPARC - Strategic Promotion of Ageing Research Capacity".… Continue

Help Wanted - Opportunity to map several large African cities...

An opportunity to carry out aerial mapping of several large African cities using RC aircraft is being discussed. These discussions are at an early stage but if the project goes ahead then I am unlikely to have the time to do everything myself and will concentrate on the business side and managing the technical side. Anyone interested in getting involved please mail me at datapolo@yahoo.com

Both individuals and corporate organisations welcome.

It is likely that we will be competing for the job… Continue

Hi Mike,

Interesting post about Africa. I started in 2007 doing aerial photography with RC electric gliders. I build my own designs which amazingly fly very well. Currently I am learning C programming and Ubuntu in order to be proficient with the Paparazzi project.

In 2005/6 I was the survey manager for a the Paero office of Works infrastructure in New Zealand. I then spent 18 months working on the coal mines in Queensland building a railway, roads and conveyor systems.. Did a lot of GPS work surveying and building the models for the graders which were GPS controlled. Even had a free hand cutting costs by doing a redesign on some of the infrastructure.

Software I can use, Autocad, 12d, civilcad and several survey packages, Leica etc.

I intend to complete my first autonomous RC glider volume survey in the later part of this year.

Your project as I said sounds interesting, I can be contacted on the following

Thanks Stephen Jack
